The Importance of Innovation

The goal of education is to help students to be good citizens, who can be able to face life and work situations in order to contribute with the development of the country. Then, to get this goal, education should vary as the society needs change, for this reason teachers must be in a constant improvement or innovation, to give the best in the teaching – learning process in order to fulfill learners’ aims.

When talking about innovation what comes to the mind is, generally, technology, but this idea should be modified. Innovation is based on implementing new techniques, changing teaching strategies to grab students’ attention. Innovation in our classrooms is important to keep students’ interested in the class, it’s necessary to look for different techniques or strategies to help our students learn better, making learning meaningful. Teachers must research in their classrooms what the students’ interests are, how children and adolescents learn best, the context in which they live, their needs, if the methods that they use are the correct ones, in other words, all the things that are related with the teaching – learning process. Teachers must analyze all the aspects to find out what things should be modified, what innovations should be applied in their classrooms according to students’ needs. This means learning process is not based on teaching – facilitating knowledge – learning, it goes beyond. Learning process involves everything that surrounds students as well as teachers.

Teachers must improve for their students because they are the main character of the education; they are the motivation for teachers to make the things better everyday. Teachers should try to improve the curriculum, develop materials according to students’ necessities, make an attractive and interactive class, and use new resources or technologies in their classroom in order to offer an interesting learning and help students to improve their performance. This is to be innovative, get engaged with the learning process trying to make learning meaningful for students.

In other words, educators must reshape the teaching process by the innovation, it can improve the quality of education in order to develop or strengthen students’ abilities. Educators can look for new ideas made by other teachers to use them in their classrooms, as the Flatmates, if they use new methods or strategies in the correct way, students can improve their language skills. What is needed to be innovative is the willingness and a little of imagination.

Also, to win a language teaching innovation award is a great motivation for those people who have got it, and it should stimulate other people to be better. Teachers must take into account Emma Pathare’s and Nuala O'Sullivan’s examples, they wanted to give an opportunity to their students to learn the language in a better way and they found out how to do it. So, educators should have this enthusiasm and look for a new alternative to help their learners, to get their own prize which is not an award, there is a better prize which is to see how students acquire the language and that you helped to get that.
